Who are we?

Hans and Esme Petersen are a dynamic leadership duo whose careers reflect a remarkable blend of cultural exploration, entrepreneurial spirit, and dedication to excellence in hospitality and operations. Hans developed an early appreciation for diverse cultures during his childhood move to the Makah Reservation in Washington state. This foundation fueled his lifelong passion for understanding and engaging with varied communities. At age 14, he began commercial salmon fishing with his uncle along the coasts from Washington to Alaska, gaining hands-on experience in challenging environments while admiring Southeast Alaska's breathtaking landscapes. Concurrently, he joined his father's construction crew, progressing from entry-level tasks to framing homes, a journey that instilled the core values of teamwork, delegation, and operational discipline. As his career advanced, Hans took on increasingly responsible roles in construction, including a major project at a large marina on the Seattle ship canal. There, he stepped into leadership, managing crews he had not personally selected. This experience sharpened his skills in discipline, decision-making, and tough personnel choices, laying the groundwork for his future successes. Throughout his professional path, Hans met and built a profound partnership with Esme, his soulmate and unwavering collaborator. Their deep friendship and shared commitment to meaningful work have defined their extraordinary marriage and joint endeavors. Together, they relocated from Sitka to Petersburg, Alaska, where they founded and grew their own construction company. Under their guidance, the business thrived, with a strong emphasis on employee empowerment, enabling team members to lead independently as Hans and Esme prepared for their next chapter. In pursuit of a serene, tropical lifestyle, they moved back to Hawaii with minimal possessions, arriving with just five suitcases. Hans assumed the role of Maintenance Manager at Volcano House, perched above the iconic Halema‘uma‘u Crater on Kilauea. Immersed in this unique environment, he embraced the principles of Aloha leadership, which profoundly influenced his approach to team management and guest service. Inspired by his passion, Esme joined him at Volcano House, contributing her talents to their shared professional pursuits. Esme has consistently demonstrated unwavering dedication to compliance, ensuring the highest standards of safety, regulatory adherence, and operational integrity across their roles. qualities that have strengthened organizational trust and performance. Hans, in turn, has shown exceptional commitment to leadership, driving teams toward record-setting revenue growth and operational milestones and awards through strategic vision, discipline, and a focus on empowering his team. Their shared drive for growth led to a leadership opportunity at Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley, California, where they continued advancing in hospitality, leadership, before heading back to Hawaii Volcano House, adapting to diverse environments. Hans and Esme Petersen embody resilience, adaptability, and a steadfast pursuit of excellence. Their story highlights the power of partnership, cultural respect, and professional integrity in building successful careers and inspiring teams in the hospitality industry.
