Hans & Esme Petersen are a dynamic duo who have embarked on a journey of exploration, cultural immersion, and entrepreneurship. Hans, from an early age, developed a deep appreciation for different cultures when he moved to the Makah Reservation in Washington state as a child. This experience ignited his passion for learning about diverse communities and their ways of life.
At the age of 14, Hans began his foray into the world of commercial salmon fishing, joining his uncle on fishing expeditions that took them along the coast from Washington state to Alaska. He relished the opportunity to explore the stunning landscapes of Southeast Alaska while honing his fishing skills. Simultaneously, Hans also started working in his father's construction crew, starting from humble tasks and gradually working his way up to framing new homes. This formative experience taught him the importance of teamwork and effective delegation.
As Hans progressed in his career, he found himself involved in various construction projects, including working on a large marina on the Seattle ship canal. This marked a pivotal moment as he assumed a leadership role, overseeing a crew of individuals he hadn't personally hired. It was during this time that he learned valuable lessons in leadership, discipline, and making tough decisions, including letting people go.
In the midst of his professional journey, Hans met his soulmate, Esme, with whom he shares an extraordinary partnership. Together, they discovered a unique blend of friendship and a deep bond that transcended their wonderful marriage. Their shared passion for work led them to move from Sitka, Alaska to Petersburg, where they established their own construction company. They dedicated themselves to growing the business and empowering their employees to take the reins when they eventually relocated to Hawaii.
Seeking a tranquil lifestyle in a tropical paradise, Hans and Esme made the life-changing decision to move to Hawaii. Leaving behind most of their possessions, they embarked on a new chapter in their lives with just five suitcases. While Esme opted to stay at home, Hans pursued a position as a maintenance manager at Volcano House, overlooking the majestic Halema‘uma‘u Crater atop Kilauea. It was here that he discovered the concept of Aloha leadership, which captivated his heart and mind. Inspired by his enthusiasm, Esme joined him at Volcano House, sharing in the joy of their professional pursuits.
Their commitment to personal and professional growth opened doors for them, and soon they were offered a leadership position at Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley, California. This opportunity allowed them to continue their journey of leadership, hospitality, and embracing new environments.
Hans and Esme Petersen exemplify a couple united by their shared love for exploring diverse cultures, building successful businesses, and embracing new challenges. Their story is one of resilience, adaptability, and the pursuit of a fulfilling life, defined by their unwavering friendship and unbreakable bond.
